Organizational sustainability functions, responsibilities and authority

What are the roles, responsibilities and authority regarding sustainability in an organization?

The top leader of an organization should ensure that responsibilities and authority for relevant roles are assigned, communicated and understood. It is important that the sustainability program is consistent with the management of the organization.

Responsibilities and authority in sustainability function

A top leader should assign responsibility for the following activities:

  • Ensure the establishment of risk management and sustainability processes. With reference or benchmarked to "best practice" for the organization;
  • Ensuring that processes effectively deliver the intended results;
  • Report on the performance of risk management and sustainability processes;
  • Report on improvement opportunities and the need for change and/or innovation;
  • Ensure the promotion of risk management and sustainability throughout the organization;
  • Ensuring the integrity of risk management and sustainability processes. Primarily when changes are planned and implemented in the organization.

It is important to have a process focus for risk management and sustainability that goes beyond preparing a sustainability report. The focus should be on identifying processes and operations that need to be controlled to maintain and improve the organization's risk management and sustainability performance. Finally, the role of the sustainability manager to support the organization's top leader and sustainability program should be clearly articulated to all of the organization's stakeholders.
